On Sunday 9 May 2016 the President signed a new law making the American bison (Bison bison, in the Bovidae family), also called buffalo, the national mammal of the United States. This law does not change the status of the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) as the US national symbol and national animal. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/10/us/politics/bison-mammaldesignation.html?WT.mc_id=SmartBriefs-Newsletter&WT.mc_ev=click&adkeywords=smartbriefsnl
