Although White-nose Syndrome (WNS) has been reported all along the eastern US seaboard, Rhode Island just reported the first confirmed case in a tri-colored bat (formerly called eastern pipistrelle, Perimyotis subflavus) hibernating in Newport County, as well as soil from two additional locations in the county testing positive for the fungus. Rhode Island is the 29th state to confirm WNS, which has infected seven bat species and killed six million bats in the past 10 years.
