This position functions as the second licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator for the Wild Friends department and is responsible for daily animal care and well-being, maintenance of animal facilities, and supervision of the wildlife rehabilitation staff, interns and volunteers in the absence of the Wild Friends manager. Also assists with oversight for the Wildlife Education program and the animals that fall within it.


  • Wildlife Husbandry: diet preparation, enclosure cleaning, handling, weighing, environmental enrichment, daily record keeping and observations
  •  Admission, examination procedures, and triage
  • Catch and transport injured animals, arrange veterinary care, and perform euthanasia
  • Administer prescribed treatments (gavage feeding, bottle feeding, advanced medication, wound care)
  • Assess health of animals in care daily (observe behaviors and feeding patterns)
  • Surgical support and sedation of animals, as needed
  • Answer questions and interact with the public through a variety of means
  • Supervisory skills with wildlife rehabilitation staff, interns and volunteers; function as point person when manager is not unavailable
  •  Function as point person for rehabilitation staff when manager is not unavailable
  •  Participate in training of new rehabilitation staff
  •  Assist with maintaining accurate and detailed records which will be reviewed by the appropriate government agency; data entry into a variety of database systems
  • Assist with the wildlife education program
  • Help oversee the maintenance and upkeep of work areas, preserve physical appearance of habitats, buildings and grounds, and inspect enclosures for safety concerns
  •  Ensure tools, equipment and vehicles receive appropriate care and maintenance
  • Interact with volunteers and visitors to include, but not limited to: conducting tours and staffing special events, assigning work, answering questions, promoting Best Friends mission and assisting with their general needs.
  •  Stay current on best practice
  • On-call 3-4 nights per week
    • perform after hours care of sick/injured/orphaned animals (heaviest workload from April-August)
    • return calls on the afterhours emergency line giving advice to people regarding sick/injured/orphaned wild animals
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Skills and Experience:

  •  Minimum of 2 years hands on experience working as a sub-permittee under or as a state and federally permitted Wildlife Rehabilitator (ability to provide care for sick, injured and orphaned animals – strong observational and assessment skills needed)
  • Have obtained or ability to obtain state and/or federal Wildlife Rehabilitation permits (including passing the UT licensing exam).
  • Knowledge of basic care and biology of all species within Wild Friends (current and ongoing with continuing education).
  • Proficiency giving SC and IM injections, oral medications and gavage feeding, bottle feeding and various wound care and bandaging techniques
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in emotionally and physically challenging situations
  • Work requires continual attention to detail -must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player who effectively uses tact and diplomacy in daily interactions, and takes initiative to resolve problems.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfort with public speaking, and strong customer service experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, Office 365, and ADP.  Experience with ShelterLuv and EzyVet software preferred.  Experience with Facebook and Instagram preferred.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and qualify for BFAS insurance

 Physical Requirements:

  •  Must be able to routinely lift 40 to 50 pounds while doing the following daily strenuous and repetitive tasks including but not limited to climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and bending in temperatures that range from below freezing to 100 degrees.
  •  Working at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Must be able to work around allergens like hay, dust, and animals.
